Interesting facts about our modal fabrics

What is Modal and what properties does this fabric have?

Modal is often referred to as a more refined viscose. The fibers for Modal are obtained from natural cellulose using technical processes. The basis for this is various types of wood, such as beech wood. Modal therefore comes from 100% naturally renewable raw materials and sustainable production. Since the raw material is not specially grown, it is also practically free of pesticides and pollutants.

The bark is removed from the wood, split and processed. The resulting fibers are then spun together using a jet process and mechanical spinning process. This means that despite the natural raw material, Modal is a synthetic fiber or a natural synthetic fiber. This textile differs from the viscose with which Modal is often compared due to its different spinning process and the resulting different properties.

Due to the material and manufacturing process, modal fabrics have greater strength, durability, absorbency, heat resistance and smoothness than other fabrics such as cotton, jersey and viscose. Modal is not only absorbent but also breathable. It is an elastic material that is soft and supple to the touch, but still retains its shape. This makes it extremely comfortable to wear - even on bare skin. The smoothness of the fibers makes it the ideal material for allergy sufferers or people with skin problems. Not only is the softness reminiscent of silk, but also the lasting shine. Modal also falls wonderfully elegantly due to its own weight, which underlines the noble and fine effect of this fabric even better.

How is Modal properly processed and cared for?

What should be taken into account when cutting Modal fabric by the meter?

When it comes to cutting, in addition to the motif placement, care should be taken to ensure that the material does not warp during processing when working with modal fabrics, as it is a relatively heavy and elastic textile. It is therefore advisable to cut the fabric over a sufficiently large area. This ensures that no excess fabric hangs down and the project does not warp.

Tip: You can use weights here to ensure better fixation. The actual cutting must be done with sharp scissors or a sharp rotary cutter, without any nicks or edges, so that the material is separated cleanly without pulling fibers and damaging the structure.

How to sew Modal successfully?

Modal fabrics are easy to work with if a few tips are followed. We recommend using a thin jersey needle or, better yet, a Microtex needle for sewing. Both are available here in the shop. Microtex needles are designed for working with particularly fine fabrics such as silk and microfibers. They have a special shape that prevents the fabric from being damaged when sewing. They can usually be used with all standard sewing machines.

It is also important to use enough pins, preferably with rounded tips, or clips that are in good condition to keep the fibers intact. When sewing, it is important not to pull on the fabric in order to achieve clean, precise seams. There should be no tension on the material, especially due to its own weight when hanging down. This is the only way to get nice, smooth, uncurled results.

How should Modal be maintained?

In general, the material is easy to care for and retains its softness even after several washes. It is basically boil-proof. However, if you want to preserve the quality and colors for as long as possible, you should wash it by hand or on a gentle cycle at a maximum of 30°C. To prevent rapid fading, a detergent without bleach should be used.

Modal fabric can be ironed with a normal iron up to 110°C, preferably without steam. It wrinkles less than comparable textiles. A vigorous shake before or after drying may be sufficient.
