Snaps & Press Fasteners Knowledge
What is a snap fastener and how does it work?
A snap fastener is a closure system consisting of two round discs, made of plastic or metal. One half of the fastener has a recess, and the other has a prong or head. Both must be attached opposite each other to the fabric so they can be pressed together. Depending on the fastening system of the snap fastener used, it can be attached using snap fastener pliers, snap pliers, variable-action pliers, the included tool and hammer, or by sewing.
The locking system utilizes the elasticity of the materials used. When the head or bridge is pressed into the recess, a certain resistance can be felt, which must be overcome by pressure combined with the material's elasticity. This resistance is usually caused by the narrowed shape or a spring element. The system is then securely closed and can only be opened again with a targeted application of force, using the same principle as for closing, but in the opposite direction.
Snap fasteners are perfect for the invisible closure of clothing such as coats and trench coats, or bags, cases, and so on when closed. Snap fasteners also don't require a buttonhole, which makes this type of closure so popular due to its quick and easy application. Compared to buttonholes, snap fasteners are usually much faster and easier to close than traditional buttons. Snap fasteners are not only easy to use, but they are also quite robust. Many snap fasteners are made of metal or a combination of plastic and metal. Their sturdy construction ensures both an attractive appearance and high durability. If the fastener is accidentally opened hastily or abruptly, this is generally not a problem. This is usually a significant advantage over zippers and buttons, which don't always withstand such situations unscathed. Therefore, these fasteners are ideally suited for children's clothing.
For which sewing projects are snap fasteners particularly suitable?
Snap fasteners and snaps are now available in many different styles, great colors, and designs. So you should be able to find the perfect fastener for every DIY project, whether you're looking for something simple or a decorative highlight. You can practically always order snap fasteners and press studs, as they can be used for many sewing projects. Besides their fastening function, they often also serve as a special decorative element. They are needed for, among other things:

How are snap fasteners and snaps attached?
Snap fasteners & snaps – sew or rivet?
There are various ways to attach fastening systems. The sew-in method has the advantage that no additional tools or special aids are required. Often, the top and bottom parts are made of metal and are sewn onto the garment by hand. However, a disadvantage is that they are generally not as durable as riveted versions. Therefore, this type of fastening is more suitable for clothing or items for adults than for children. This type of fastening is also less noticeable, which is why it is often used on the button plackets of coats or similar garments.
The second option requires no sewing at all. Here, the top and bottom surfaces are riveted to the backing material. This version is available in metal or plastic and is well-suited for many materials. The necessary tools or attachments are usually included. Often, a hole must first be made at the attachment point, for example with an awl, through which the rivet is threaded. Then, only a small hammer is needed for riveting. The Prym creative hammer, in combination with the tripod setting tool, is ideal for this. This makes installation a breeze! Alternatively, the Vario pliers from Prym are recommended. It's easier to use because it's compatible with many attachments, and a hammer is no longer needed. This makes it faster and more convenient.
How do Jersey snap fasteners differ in their application?
Another very popular fastener option is the jersey snap for stretchy fabrics. Unlike other types, this one features two open rings or closed snap discs with serrated backs. The advantage of the open ring design is that the fabric behind it is visible, allowing for some great effects. No extra hole needs to be made in the fabric for attachment, as the serrations displace the material and anchor it in the other part. Contrary to what the name might suggest, it can also be used on thin, non-stretchy fabrics. Jersey snaps are available in many different colors and both simple and colorful designs.
Where are snap fasteners typically placed on anoraks?
Anorak snap fasteners are a popular choice for heavily used leisure, everyday, and workwear. They differ from other types due to a spring located in the disc head. This additional spring ensures a secure closure, yet the fastener can still be easily opened with a little force. Besides outerwear, this type is also suitable for underwear such as trousers, bags, and backpacks.
