Snaps & Press Studs Knowledge
What is a snap fastener and how does it work?
A snap fastener is a fastening system made of two round discs, made of plastic or metal. One half of the fastener has a recess and the other a bar or head, and both must be attached to the fabric opposite each other so that they can be pressed together. The fastening can be done using snap fastener pliers, snap pliers, vario pliers, the tools and hammer provided, or by sewing, depending on the fastening system of the snap fastener or snap used.
The closure system makes use of the elasticity of the materials used. When the head or bridge is pressed into the recess, a certain resistance can be felt, which must be overcome by pressure in conjunction with the elasticity of the material. The resistance is usually caused by the narrowed shape or a spring element. The system is then firmly closed and can only be opened again by applying targeted force, whereby the same principle applies as when closing, only in the opposite direction.
Snap fasteners are perfect for invisible fastening of clothing such as coats and trench coats or bags, cases and so on when closed. Snap fasteners also do not require a buttonhole, which makes this type of fastening so popular because they are quick and easy to attach. Compared to buttonholes, snap fasteners can usually be closed much quicker and easier than conventional buttons. Snap fasteners and snaps are not only easy to use, they are also quite robust. Many snap fasteners and snap fasteners are made of metal or a composite of plastic and metal. Their robust design ensures a beautiful appearance as well as high durability. If the fastener is ripped open hastily or suddenly, this is usually not a problem. This is usually a big advantage over zippers and buttons, which do not always survive this unscathed. This makes the fasteners ideal for children's clothing.
For which sewing projects are snap fasteners particularly suitable?
There are now press studs and snap fasteners in many different designs and great colors and designs. So you should be able to find the right fastener for every DIY project. Whether simple or as a decorative highlight. The most popular sizes of press studs and snap fasteners are between 9mm and 30mm. Large press stud variants are extremely popular for bags, clothing and especially children's clothing.
You can practically always order press studs and snap fasteners, as they can be used for many sewing projects. In addition to their fastening function, they often also serve as a special decorative element. They are needed for, among other things:
- bags
- cases

How are snap fasteners and snaps attached?
Press fasteners & snaps – should you sew or rivet?
There are various ways of attaching the fastening systems. The sew-in version has the advantage that no additional tools or special aids are required. The upper and lower parts are often made of metal, which are sewn onto the sewing piece by hand. One disadvantage is that they are usually not as durable as the riveted versions. This type of fastening is therefore more suitable for clothing or items for adults than for clothing for children. This type of fastening is also less noticeable, which is why it is often used on the button strip of coats or similar items.
The second variant does not require any sewing at all. Here the top and bottom sides are riveted to the carrier material. This variant is available in metal or plastic. They are well suited to many materials. The tools required for attachment or the attachments for fastening are usually included. Often a hole must be made at the attachment point beforehand, for example with an awl, through which the bridge is threaded. Then all you need is a small hammer for riveting. The Prym creative hammer is ideal for this in combination with the tripod impact tool - this makes attachment child's play! Alternatively, we recommend using the Vario pliers from Prym , as these are compatible with many attachments and no hammer is required. This is quicker and more convenient.
How do jersey snap fasteners differ in their attachment?
Another very popular fastening option is the jersey snap fastener for elastic fabrics. Unlike the other versions, this one has two open rings or closed button discs with jagged backs facing each other. The advantage of the open ring design is that the fabric behind it is visible. This allows you to achieve great effects. No extra hole needs to be made in the carrier material to attach it, as the jagged edges displace the material in place and anchor it in the counterpart. Contrary to what the name implies, it can also be used on thin, non-elastic fabrics. Jersey snap fasteners are available in many different colors and simple and colorful motifs.
Where are anorak snap fasteners preferably placed?
Anorak snap fasteners are often used for heavily used leisure, everyday and work clothing. Anorak snap fasteners differ from other variants in that they have a spring placed in the head of the disc. This additional spring guarantees a firm closure. The fastener can still be opened easily with targeted force. In addition to outerwear, this form is also suitable for underwear such as trousers or bags and backpacks.
