What is an eyelet and what function does it have?
An eyelet is usually a ring made of rubber, plastic or metal with a fastening, reinforcement or protective function. They consist of two parts, a lower part and an upper part which are anchored together. Either a hole is punched beforehand or the eyelet with disc itself has teeth with which it can penetrate the carrier material. The eyelets with discs are usually secured together by a blow or by pressing, as the elasticity of the material is used. This can be done either with a hammer or eyelet pliers. Plastic discs are also available which can be placed between the eyelet and the carrier material to protect the material, especially when dealing with finer fabrics. Openings and holes can be reinforced with eyelets. The smooth eyelets also protect the objects threaded through from damage caused by surfaces that would otherwise be too rough.
Where are eyelets and rivets used?
Eyelets with discs are often used on clothing. The items of clothing can then be closed with a hook, for example. The closure can be made not only with hooks, but also with cords. Eyelets and rivets are also often used on bags. For example, you can quickly and easily hammer eyelets into bags in order to attach the bag handles using rivets. They can also be used to decorate and enhance items of clothing and objects. Rivets, on the other hand, are often used on clothing to reinforce the seam, for example on jeans. They are more commonly used to attach handles and tabs to accessories such as bags. The good thing is that you don't even have to sew them. Rivets and eyelets are usually part of Prym's sew-free products, which make it wonderfully easy to embellish your items. They make it easy to add great decorative accents in no time at all. Eyelets and rivets are also very popular in the craft sector. In the outdoor area, they are also well suited for tents, tarpaulins, etc., which are laced or attached with hooks. In the home, they are suitable for curtains and other furnishings. Popular application examples are:
- bag
- bras
- blouses
- cases
- shirts
- hoodies
- jackets
- jeans
- sweatpants
- corsets
- Plan
- backpacks
- bags
- curtains
- tents
What should you consider when buying rivets and eyelets?
How are eyelets attached and what are the differences in size?
Rivets and eyelets with washers are often sew-free products that are generally easy to apply. They come in different sizes, which allows for many different uses. The tools for attaching them are usually included, so all you need is your own hammer.
However, there are still various ways of attaching them. The smaller sizes from 4.5mm to 8mm can be attached without any problems using other tools of your choice, such as the Vario pliers or other impact tools such as the ergonomic tripod. For eyelets that are larger than 8mm, you should use the special tool provided and your own hammer. When attaching, it is important to attach the eyelets in such a way that they do not rotate on the carrier material; then they sit nice and firmly and do not tear out so easily.
There are also eyelets that can be sewn on. These eyelets are then already fixed into a carrier material such as artificial leather. The patch is then simply sewn on.
There are different materials, sizes and colors for eyelets and rivets to choose from. This allows you to give your projects an individual touch and set unique accents.
How are rivets installed and what are they used for?
Universal rivets and hollow rivets are available in different designs and sizes. The size of the head and the length of the pin are crucial for the specific purpose. The longer the pin, the thicker the material that needs to be riveted can be. The tool needed to attach them is included in the package. All you need is your own hammer. There are different sizes and materials that allow for different looks and styles.
What are Power Dots used for?
With fine fabrics, these practical little helpers are used to prevent eyelets and snap fasteners from tearing. The Power Dots are simply ironed onto the wrong side of the fabric. The Power Dot is then firmly attached to the fabric. It is no longer visible later, as it is covered by the fastenings. These tools provide additional protection and therefore security, especially with fine, single-layer fabrics. They are also suitable for easily carrying out repairs to torn snap fasteners and eyelets.
