Interesting facts about our jersey fabric
Jersey fabric is one of the most popular fabrics because it is very elastic and stretchy, and therefore fits well to the body. Jersey fabric is not only very comfortable to wear, but also easy to process and the fact that jersey fabric by the meter is a relatively easy-care fabric. Jersey fabric feels good to the touch because it is very soft and therefore very supple. The high absorbency combined with the breathable properties make jersey fabrics a real all-rounder that is very suitable for everyday use!
What is jersey fabric made of and how does it differ?
Jersey is not a specific material, but rather a method of production. Jersey fabrics are knitted fabrics; mostly made from mixed fibers, often viscose or cotton blends, with a certain amount of elastane. The way it is made gives this fabric its soft and elastic properties. Jersey is characterized by its light ribbed pattern.
Jersey fabric is commonly divided into single, double, triple, interlock, jacquard and cloqué jersey:
- Single jersey is characterized by the fact that it is made with just one row of needles. Alternating left and right stitches are used, which results in this jersey being very breathable and stretchy and therefore comfortable to wear. Single jersey is therefore ideal for T-shirts.
- Double jersey , on the other hand, is knitted with two rows of needles, right-right or left-left, depending on the manufacturer. This manufacturing process means that this jersey fabric is of higher quality and, above all, more robust. This makes this fabric ideal for higher-quality T-shirts.
- Interlock jersey is also made using two rows of needles and is knitted crosswise using a right-right weave. What makes it special is that two types of jersey with similar properties are processed together. The double layers result in an opaque, warm and durable fabric that also retains its shape particularly well. This makes this jersey fabric ideal for children's clothing, hats, scarves, underwear and T-shirts.
- Jacquard jersey is also made with two rows of needles. The special features of this jersey are its characteristic structural patterns and the elegant look due to the silky surface. This is due to the special manufacturing process of knitting, non-knitting and tuck handles. This jersey is also comfortable to wear, but also a little firmer than other variants, which is why it is very suitable for making jackets, sweaters and dresses.
How are jersey fabrics properly processed and cared for?
Notes on cutting jersey
When cutting jersey fabric by the meter, it is important to pay attention to the direction of the fabric to ensure even stretch.
The rolling up that is very characteristic of jersey fabric can be counteracted by ironing shaping tape onto the edges. This measure gives the material more stability, which makes cutting much easier. A big advantage of jersey fabric is that it hardly frays, which is why it can be sewn and processed with an open edge. Sewing recommendation Jersey
It is recommended to use special jersey needles for sewing jersey. Needles for jersey fabrics have a rounded and blunt tip that protects and preserves the structure of the fabric.
When setting up the sewing machine, make sure that a stitch pattern with sufficient thread width is used to ensure the durability of the seams when the fabric is subjected to stress. The zigzag or triple stitch are particularly recommended here. Overlock machines, if available, are very suitable for processing jersey fabric. The advantage here is that they cut, finish and sew the fabric in one step.
Furthermore, fabric rippling can be avoided if the pressure of the presser foot is selected appropriately, depending on whether this is adjustable. Alternatively, an appropriate adjustment of the top-loading system can be helpful.
In addition to the optimal thread width and the optimal pressure from the presser foot, the optimal thread tension must be found to avoid the thread breaking. Here it is important to test and vary the settings until the best result is achieved with jersey.
Even with jersey fabrics sold by the meter, it is extremely important to let the sewing machine guide the jersey fabric and not to pull or push it disproportionately!
Care recommendation Jersey
When it comes to caring for jersey, it is important to consider which yarn was used in its manufacture, as the care instructions may vary. The specific instructions can be found on the relevant product page. In general, to ensure the jersey fabric lasts as long as possible, it is recommended to wash it inside out, by hand or on a gentle cycle. This means that the colours last longer and are less likely to wash out, and the lower temperature also ensures that the fabric shrinks less.
When drying jersey fabrics, it is recommended to dry the textile lying down if possible so that the garment or the fabric does not wear out so quickly due to the higher weight and the residual moisture.
Ironing is possible in principle if necessary. Care should be taken to always iron lengthways. It is important to pay attention to the composition of the jersey and not to iron the material too hot in order to preserve the colors and prevent shrinkage.
If you follow these processing and care instructions, you will have a lot of fun with your homemade garment or sewing project.
